January 29, 2016 News Flash from Miss Lori’s Pre-K Class

Dear Pre-K Families,

We introduced the letter “Nn” this week.  The children made a “Nancy Nurse” puppet and thought of many words that begin with the letter “Nn”.  They also practiced writing the letter “Nn”.

This week we read a story called The Mitten Tree by Candace Christiansen.  Our class painted a large tree and then each child made a matching pair of mittens to hang on the tree.  Some children painted their mittens, some colored them, and some glued different things on their mittens.  We discussed what a “pair” of something means and that the mittens must look like each other.  We also read a book called Snip, Snip, Snow by Nancy Poydar.  Each child cut out and created their very own snowflake, which we displayed in our classroom.  The girls and boys are always so proud when they see their work all around the room!

All of the children learned about magnets this week.  They went on a “magnet hunt” using magnets of all different shapes and sizes.  The boys and girls had a great time exploring the different things in our classroom that the magnets were attracted to.  They learned that these items contain iron.  I read the book, What Is A Magnet by Franklyn Bradley.  We then painted using magnets!  A piece of paper was placed inside of a box with a few round magnets and some different colored paint inside of the box.  Then the child held onto a strong magnet and held it under the box which then caused the round magnets to be attracted to the large magnet which then caused the round magnets to move all around the paint on the white paper!  The children thought this was absolutely amazing!  These paintings are hanging up in our classroom.

The boys and girls completed another page in their “All About Me” book and also began a book called “Where Do Animals Go In Winter” which will come home next week.  We are discussing hibernation and migration to coincide with this unit.  We will also discuss “Ground Hog’s Day”.

It was great to meet with many of you this week to conference about your child.  I am so pleased to witness the tremendous growth in each child.  You should be very proud of your children!

Just a few reminders:

  • February 12, Friday is our Valentine’s Day Party. Please feel free to send in a valentine for each friend in our class, as well as a treat for our party.  Please remember, no lollipops and please keep the snack “nut free”.  We will also wear pajamas to school on that day in recognition of the letter “Pp”!  Miss Sheryl will also make pancakes for us to enjoy.  What a fun day that is sure to be!
  • After the February vacation (Feb.15-Feb.19) we will celebrate the 100th day of school on Friday February 26. I will be asking your child to bring in 100 items that can fit into a one gallon Ziploc bag.  Your child will count out the items in school and we will have a party for the 100th day!  We have been talking about this special day since we began school in September!

Enjoy your weekend!

Warmly,

Miss Lori and Miss Kristine
